In Jimmy this, Jimmy that, the first person narrator remains unnamed, always trying to blend into the background, staying clear of trouble. Each and every reader's experience of a book is unique, perhaps some responses are surprising to the reader him/herself. I don't know if Shand was conscious as he was writing of the audience to which he hoped to appeal, but this is a book which can leave a haunting impression on every generation; as a grandmother in my late sixties I was struck on reading Jimmy by how little I really understood of how it is to be a teenager in spite of having been a mother of two - the pressure to be accepted and included, the hormonal maelstrom, the emotional conficts, and Jimmy this, Jimmy That opened my eyes. This is a powerful read, dark, fast-paced, haunting, poignant, and also very very funny . It asks to be read again! I look forward to more work from Michael Shand.
